The Leica Welt at Leitz-Park Wetzlar, the visitor center that unites museum, gallery, store, café, and event spaces, is introducing a spectacular new highlight: a monumental Leica M11 Monochrom sculpture carved from white Carrara marble. Weighing around eight tons – including the camera and its black Marquina marble pedestal – the artwork stands as a powerful symbol of the fusion between art, craftsmanship, and photography.
The sculpture was created by Dutch artist Casper Braat, known for transforming everyday objects into timeless works of art. In close collaboration with Leica Store Lisse (NL), Braat meticulously reproduced the Leica M11 Monochrom in marble, inverting its original black color into white stone. Every detail corresponds precisely to the real camera, from the engraved serial numbers to the lens markings.
The unique large-scale sculpture greets visitors in front of the Ernst Leitz Museum at Leica Welt Wetzlar and will be on display from October 2025 to January 2026.
The presentation coincides with the Celebration of Photography (COP), Leica’s annual highlight event that brings together photographers, artists, and guests from around the world. In Leica’s anniversary year 2025, marking 100 years since the launch of the first Leica camera, the presentation of this monumental work adds another cultural milestone to the festivities.
In addition to the unique large sculpture, a limited edition of ten smaller marble Leica M11 Monochrom sculptures will be released. Each marble camera, handcrafted from white Carrara marble and placed on a contrasting black Marquina marble stand, is paired with a limited Leica M11 Monochrom “Leitz Wetzlar” edition and a Leica Noctilux-M 1:1.2/50 mm ASPH. lens. The serial numbers and engravings of camera and sculpture correspond one-to-one, forming a complete artistic and technical pairing. These limited sculptures are available exclusively through Leica Store Lisse, Netherlands.
The collaboration between Leica, Leica Store Lisse, and Casper Braat celebrates precision, permanence, and creativity. While Leica preserves moments in time through photography, Braat preserves the camera itself in stone – transforming an object of craftsmanship into an enduring work of art.
With this monumental marble Leica, the Leica Welt underscores its role as a destination “where art meets imaging”, inviting visitors to experience the brand’s artistic and cultural world in a new dimension.
Behind the Scenes
About the Artist
Casper Braat (born 1991, Amsterdam) is a Dutch artist whose work transforms everyday objects into symbols of luxury and permanence. Using traditional materials such as marble and gold, he elevates the ordinary to the iconic, exploring themes of consumerism, excess, and time. His sculptures combine technical precision with a reflective critique of contemporary culture.
Braat studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (BA, 2015) and the Sandberg Institute (MA, 2019). Represented by Torch Gallery Amsterdam since 2018, his notable series include Forever (since 2020), Departures (2023), and Work in Progress (2024–2025), presented internationally at venues such as Dutch Design Week Eindhoven and Art Rotterdam.
